Gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as acid reflux or “heartburn”): Acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus (the “food pipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This can cause symptoms such as chest pain that radiates to the throat and a sour taste in the mouth.
